SUMMARY:The Music Stayed: Past\, Present & Future Frequencies - The Art of Skira Martinez
DESCRIPTION:Skira Martinez builds with what other people threw away: piano keys that stopped sounding years ago\, blown speaker heads\, a vintage tape player\, a salvaged cymbal\, a few afro combs. In The Music Stayed: Past\, Present & Future Frequencies\, those parts become twelve sculptures and collages about Black music and the places that kept it alive. \nOn Sunday\, November 1\, we open the show the right way\, with a live jazz set inside Delicious at The Dunbar from 2:30 to 4:30 PM and the artist in the room. The Dunbar housed the musicians who made Central Avenue famous\, so it’s a fitting place to bring the hardware of that music back through the door. \nThe exhibition moves in three parts. Cultural Memory honors blues women\, juke joints and the dance floor. Transformation follows how music gets remade\, ending on a shadow box for Thelonious Monk. Future Frequencies imagines the people who come next\, built from speaker heads and amplifier parts\, one with a working speaker in its chest. \nAfter opening day\, the show runs through January 30\, 2027\, with live jazz every Sunday from 2:30 to 4:30 PM and a different performer each week. \nPlan your visit. Parking is a small lot behind the restaurant\, so leave extra time on Sundays. Metro Bus lines 53 and 105 stop at Central and 42nd\, about a minute’s walk; the A Line’s Vernon Station is about fifteen minutes on foot. Tables fill up during the jazz set\, so reserve ahead. \nHours: Mon\, Wed & Thu 10 AM–9 PM · Fri & Sat 10 AM–10 PM · Sun 10 AM–7 PM · Tue closed \nCurated by Omar Holguin\, Founder & Curator\, La Mancha Gallery.
