Watercolor That Hides Nothing

Kenneth Gatewood paints in watercolor, a medium that doesn’t forgive mistakes and doesn’t let you cover anything up. For decades, the South Central Los Angeles artist has used that unforgiving transparency to hold onto what a neighborhood refuses to forget. The Medium of Memory brings his work to Arts @ Delicious at the Historic Dunbar Hotel for a season-long exhibition running August 8 through September 30, 2026, presented in partnership with Delicious at The Dunbar.

About the Exhibition

The show is organized in three movements, the way a jazz suite unfolds. The first is the music — portraits of the jazz and soul legends who once filled rooms like this one. The second is the children — the innocent expression, the impulsive gesture, the everyday tenderness that has become Gatewood’s signature. The third is the legacy — deeper works of struggle and endurance, where watercolor’s transparency becomes a kind of witness. Ten works hang across the space, chosen to move through all three registers without crowding the room. This is not a show about Central Avenue’s history — it’s hung inside a building that lived it.

A Season Built Around the Avenue

The exhibition’s run is timed to the season of the 31st Annual Central Avenue Jazz Festival, where Gatewood appears as the featured artist at the Arts Pavilion on September 19. Rather than a single opening night, the show unfolds week by week through The Dunbar’s ongoing Sunday Jazz Showcase (2:30–4:30 PM), a live set from a fresh, unannounced performer every Sunday of the run — the same rhythm of music and gathering that once defined this stretch of Central Avenue.
