"Zozobra" Art Exhibition by Maria Chavez Montes at the mexican consulate on 7/4/2008

Los Angeles, CA, 09/4-27/2008 —Following her recent journey to her native Mexico, Maria Teresa Chavez Montes returns to Los Angeles, bringing a refreshed and vibrant approach to her distinctive style of painting.

Drawing profound inspiration from the celebrated Zacatecas poet Ramon Lopez Velarde, her new exhibition, “Zozobra” (Uneasiness), offers an evocative exploration of artistic expression and cultural heritage.

This compelling exhibit features 28 innovative works of tempera on paper, showcasing Maria Teresa’s mastery in manipulating this medium across various styles and dimensions. Each piece creates a terrestrial abstraction, blending organic silhouettes, ethereal passages, and twisted metallic forms. These elements evoke a nostalgic yet dynamic connection to distant lands and forgotten spaces. Through her use of color, Maria Teresa captures an antique, picturesque essence of nature, conveying the deep-seated emotions and fervor of a woman straddling the cultural border between Mexico and the United States.

Curated by Omar Holguin, “Zozobra (Uneasiness)” introduced the internationally renowned artist Maria Teresa Chavez Montes at the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles. The exhibition received outstanding reviews and widespread acclaim.
