I. CULTURAL MEMORY
The Music We Carry
Cuttin’ A Rug celebrates dance as an expression of communal joy, freedom, cultural identity, and ancestral
connection. Constructed from salvaged piano keys and an altered candle holder, the artwork transforms
familiar objects into a lively sculptural composition. The arrangement of the figures suggests movement,
rhythm, and spontaneous celebration. The work recognizes that dance continues to evolve while carrying
connections to earlier generations. Even when movements and musical styles are new, elements of ancestral
traditions remain present. Cuttin’ A Rug celebrates the social spaces where music and dance bring people
together.
