I. CULTURAL MEMORY
The Music We Carry

Hidden Note draws attention to overlooked histories within early blues music, particularly the important
contributions of women and the role of the banjo before the guitar became closely associated with the
genre. Constructed from salvaged piano keys, carved wood, cotton, and other found materials, the work
brings together fragments of musical instruments and objects associated with cultural memory. A small
figure emerges among the piano keys, suggesting histories and experiences that remain present even when
they are not widely acknowledged. The composition invites viewers to consider the stories embedded within
musical traditions. Music carries more than melodies and rhythms; it also carries histories that may not
always be spoken but continue to resonate across generations.
