Thelonious is a tribute to Thelonious Monk, whose distinctive approach to piano, composition, rhythm, and
improvisation helped expand the possibilities of jazz. Within a wooden shadow box, Skira arranges fragments
of broken musical instruments, a record player component, scrap wood, and music paper stained with coffee
and tobacco. The combination creates a layered visual composition reflecting the complexity, experimentation,
and unexpected relationships associated with Monk’s music. Objects that once contributed to musical
performance take on new relationships, suggesting how music evolves through reinterpretation of existing
forms. Thelonious celebrates Monk’s originality and the possibilities that emerge when conventions are
challenged.
